Holland offers a full end-of-July schedule

July 22, 2008

The Holland Project factory will churn out, not one or two or even three, but four fantastic events set to take place from July 20-27 at various venues city-wide (Wingfield Park, South Side School, City Plaza and West Street), marking the busiest week yet for this young organization. Featuring Plan to Rock Your Vote on July 20, Brundibár and “…I Never Saw Another Butterfly” on July 24, Art+Music Friday Night Market on July 25, and The Art of Noise: A 4-part Event Experience on July 27, Holland is extremely proud to share the fruits of their labor and to showcase the best of Reno’s young and talented artists, musicians, crafters, performers and more.

Holland hopes you will join them for a special performance of “Brundibár” and “…I Never Saw Another Butterfly” on Thurs., July 24 at South Side School at 5:30 p.m., followed by a special forum on Tolerance/Intolerance hosted by original Brundibar cast member Ela Weissberger and Holocaust survivor Stephen Nasser. Brundibár, a children’s opera originally performed in the Terezin concentration camp, is making its Nevada debut, while “…I Never Saw Another Butterfly” is a modern interpretation by Reno teens of the artwork and poetry smuggled from the camp in the 1940s. This unique and important event is not to be missed.

On Sun., July 27 at Wingfield Park, Holland presents a momentous event, The Art of Noise: A 4-part Event Experience, featuring: Cari Cunningham Dance Troupe’s “Mowed,” a lawn-mower inspired dance piece; Yes Yes Y’all Hip Hop in the Park from Reno’s Spoken Views crew and students at Rainshadow Charter High; Harmonious Discord, a live performance of an original punk-rock inspired score with members of our local music community (members of My Flag is on Fire, Panic Opera, and Short Hair) and the McQueen High Orchestra; and the Reno premiere of Sleeping Nights Awake—a stellar documentary on Sonic Youth as shot by seven Reno high school students.

Sleeping Nights Awake, made in 2006, has screening to much acclaim at film festivals worldwide (Noisepop, AFI Dallas, Barcelona, Paris, Budapest, Finland, South Korea, Milan, Cinevegas—to name a few). It’s screened in over 15 countries and on five continents—but never in Reno, despite having being made here. This homecoming screening is a much-awaited event.

The original orchestration, Harmonious Discord, was created in honor of the film debut and its topic—world-renowned band Sonic Youth, and was meant to bring two distinct musical genres and communities (rock musicians and orchestra musicians) together for a remarkable experience. This event is one that promises to showcase the very best of Reno’s young talent in a variety of mediums and forms. The festivities are at Wingfield Park, from 6-10 p.m.

And last but not least, Holland hopes you will venture down to West Street on July 25 for our third installment of Art+Music Friday Night at the Downtown Urban Market for the specially themed “Word Up and Vertigo Pre-Party.” Dress as your favorite Alfred Hitchcock character, join in the on-stage Trivia game, watch local musicians, or visit the twenty vendors for wonderful art, crafts, products, button making, or food and drink. It’s a vibrant street party and we hope you join us.
