For a unique and natural mountain experience, Squaw Valley offers guided sunset hikes Friday and Saturday evenings and full moon hikes on the evening before and the evening of the full moon in July and August.

Both sunset and full moon hikes leave from High Camp, elevation 8,200', at approximately 6 p.m.

Knowledgeable guides provide a wealth of information about the geology, flowers, trees and animals native to the region, as well as Squaw Valley history and environmental sustainability projects currently underway at the resort.

The hikes are $5 for adults, youth & seniors and free for children 12 and under. An evening Cable Car & Hike Package is $15 for adults, youth & seniors and children ride the Cable Car for just $5 after 5 p.m.

Sunset hikes
Squaw Valley USA’s popular sunset hikes begin from High Camp and meander around the mountain’s majestic peaks before the sun sets over the Sutter Buttes.

Before the sun sets, guides lead hikers to the perfect spot on the crest of Squaw Valley’s upper mountain. Hikers will take in panoramic views of the Squaw Valley Meadow, Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada, lit with the backdrop of the setting sun. This summer sunset hikes are scheduled for July 11-12, July 19, July 25-26, Aug. 1-2, Aug. 8-9, and Aug. 29-30. Sunset hikes are approximately 1-2 hours long.

Full moon hikes:
For an experience that garners peace, tranquility and the stunning beauty of the upper mountain in the evening twilight, Squaw Valley USA also offers full moon hikes on the evening before and the evening of the full moon in July and August.

On full Moon hikes, hikers climb to mountain vistas through fields of wildflowers under the glow of the full moon and are treated to inspiring views as the moon rises slowly over Lake Tahoe. The moderate level hikes last roughly three hours and guests are free to explore and walk at their own pace. Full moon hikes are scheduled for July 17 and 18 and Aug. 15 and 16. Full moon hikes last roughly 2-3 hours depending on the timing of the moonrise.

Both are casually paced hikes with the hike destination and route customized to the group’s size and interest. Both hikes explore easy to moderate terrain and hikers are free to walk at their own pace. Sturdy shoes and warm clothes are recommended, and hikers are encouraged to bring water and a flashlight.

Hikers of all ages and abilities are welcome and no reservations are needed. Please note that all hikes depart at 6 p.m. from High Camp. Guests are encouraged to arrive between 5 and 5:30 p.m. so they can ride the Cable Car to High Camp. Hike registration takes place between 5:30 and 6 p.m. at the top of the Cable Car (High Camp).

Sunset and Full Moon Hikes can be canceled due to inclement weather so please call ahead (530-583-6985) to confirm if you think the weather might be questionable.
