Ranger stations and visitor centers have a variety of reasons for wanting to keep tabs on who has headed off into their respective wildernesses. These reasons include preventing overuse of a certain area and visitor safety. It's a good idea to check in with one of these offices, fill out necessary paperwork and chat with a ranger about trail conditions and any camping or fire restrictions.
