It was four decades ago that music’s “King of Romance” emerged as one of the foremost entertainers in the world. Marking the 40th anniversary of when he first reached international acclaim, “Enge,” as he is known to fans and friends alike, is in the midst of a worldwide tour which will take him to over 100 cities.
Contemporary British classics
Also in celebration of the 40th anniversary, Engelbert has released “The Winding Road,” a new CD featuring songs that he calls “contemporary British classics” written by the likes of James Blunt, Eric Clapton, Elton John, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Sting.
Smash hits
Once called “The premier voice of the 20th century” by the London Times, the multiple Grammy nominee with the ultra-smooth three-and-one-half-octave range and natural charisma has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, including 64 gold and 24 platinum albums. It was 40 years ago that he first hit the charts with his smash hit Release Me (And Let Me Love Again). The song went to No.1 in 11 countries and it was so big in the United Kingdom that it managed to prevent The Beatles’ two-sided hit Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever from reaching the top of the charts.
The next decade brought such hits as “After the Lovin’,” “Winter World Of Love,” “Am I That Easy To Forget,” “The Last Waltz,” “There Goes My Everything,” “Les Bicyclettes De Belsize,” “This Moment In Time,” “‘Til You And Your Lover Are Lovers Again” and “A Man Without Love.” He has now recorded almost 80 albums including many multi-language versions.
Awards and accolades
Engelbert has performed for Her Majesty the Queen, several Presidents and many heads of state. In 1978 he received a “Georgie Award” from the American Guild of Variety Artists recognizing him as “Entertainer of the Year.” This honor put him alongside the likes of other “Georgie” winners including Johnny Carson, Barbra Streisand and Barry Manilow. In 1988, his performance of “One World” was seen by over five billion people around the globe kicking off the festivities at the Seoul Summer Olympics. The following year, he joined the elite performers from the worlds of Movies, Television and Music when he was honored with a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Author
He received his second Grammy nomination for the 2003 album, “Always Hear the Harmony.” The following year, his autobiography Engelbert: What’s In A Name? made it’s way onto the best-seller lists, giving readers an intimate look at not only his career and family, but the eventful life he has led as well.
